Come explore culture, sound design, creativity and rhythm through the language and notes of tabla, the traditional drums of north India. Robin Sukhadia, disciple of Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri, leads focused classes on learning and applying the rhythmic language behind tabla. Drums are available for learning and practice within the gallery. Learn correct posture, finger positioning, recitation, tala (cycles of times), and composition (kaidas, tuchras, mukras, thekas, tee hai, and more). Students of all levels encouraged to participate, especially complete beginners.

Classes are offered in this third session for 5 Tuesdays 6-8pm beginning August 19, 2008 in 1 hour segments according to skill level. 6-7pm for beginners, 7-8pm for intermediate players. $10 - $20 (Sliding Scale) per 1 hour lesson. Students can pay per class or a special $45 total fee for all 5 classes.

About Robin Sukhadia:

Robin has been studying tabla under Pandit Swapan Chaudhuri at the Ali Akbar College of Music for the past seven years. His special focus on the musical traditions and rhythms of south Asia informs his approach to musical arrangement and composition on a wide range of concert, film and album productions. For the past five years, Robin has traveled internationally on behalf of Project Ahimsa, an organization committed to empowering impoverished youth through music education. He recently completed a Master in Fine Arts in World Music at the California Institute of the Arts. More information available at www.astralaudio.com/robin.
