call for exhibition proposals
Proposals due in office June 30.The Sangati Community Center for South Asian Music is accepting proposals for visual art exhibitions at the Sangati to be shown between September 2008 and March 2009.
Although all proposals are welcome, preference will be given to projects that involve site-specific installation and artwork that has a relationship to the music and performing arts community at the Sangati. Artwork can involve but is not limited to painting and drawing, ceiling and wall sculpture, projection (artist must provide media equipment), and performance with a related exhibition element. Collaboration with musicians, dancers, and other performers of music is highly encouraged, though please note all music must be unamplified (no mics, speakers, electronic instruments). (If a collaborator is not already identified, the Sangati staff can work with artists to identify suitable collaborators.) Artwork need not already be made, although proposals will be evaluated based on the strength of their ideas and past work.
Exhibitions are generally 6-8 weeks in length and must accommodate the diversity of programming at the Sangati space. Proceeds from any sale of artwork at the exhibition will be divided between the Sangati and the Artist/s after the costs of the exhibition have been covered (Generally, Sangati receives 40% of any sales). If the artist/s are doing work based on the performances of the Sangati, then a short-term membership will be conferred to the artist/s for the duration of the project.
Please include a short description of the proposed project (approx. 700 words), a biography or CV, 5-10 images of past work for each involved artist or the artwork you wish to show if already made, sketches or photographs (if appropriate), other supporting materials showing either the artistŐs experience or illustrating the ideas for the proposal. (Please email for the gallery dimensions.)
Although the Sangati Center cannot provide funding up front for the exhibitions at this time, it is a 501c(3) and is open to helping artists raise funds for projects at the time of approval. Also, the organization will promote selected exhibitions on its website and its email list, and encourages artist/s to produce fliers, which can be made available at all Sangati Center events.
All proposals must be received by 5pm, Monday, June 30.
